Air suspension was once used only in luxury passenger cars, but due to its versatility, it is now used in a wide range of cars. This system is also known as pneumatic in Iran and it is very similar to hydraulic systems in terms of function. with the difference that air and air compressor are used instead of oil and oil pump in this system. This system is filled with compressed air, and the piston connected to the wheel’s lower connections causes the air to be compressed and springy by its movement in the cylinder
If the weight of the car changes, the valve installed above the air cylinder is opened to increase the amount of air inside the cylinder so that the car stays at its height despite the increase in load
Functions of the air suspension system
In the air suspension system, air bags are used instead of springs, whose task is to control the constant amount of the spring, automatically control the height of the car
The front and rear airbags are part of the front assistance system, which are installed between the vehicle compartment and the passenger compartment. An electric compressor provides the compressed air necessary for the operation of this system. In such a way that the dryer system installed on the compressor prevents water from entering the system by absorbing air moisture. Because water damages the system, it should be prevented from entering the system. In this way, the compressed air reaches each of the air springs through the pipe from the dryer
Components of the air suspension system
The basis of the work of the air suspension system is based on the compressibility of the work, which is done by a set of components. The components of this system are introduced below
Air Compressor
The air compressor is the first and main component of the air suspension system and its task is to compress the air
Air Valves Block
The solenoid valve is another component of the pneumatic system that is installed on each solenoid spring and opens and closes. The function of this valve is to control the pressure and volume of air inside the airbag. Turning on and off the compressor and connecting and disconnecting the solenoids is the responsibility of the electronic control module
control unit (ECU)
Using the data of the sensors installed on each axle of the car, this unit controls the amount of air pressure entering each of the air bags in relation to the increase in load and road conditions by turning off and on the solenoids
pressure switch
When the pressure of the air tank reaches the desired level, the pressure relief valve cuts off the air flow of the compressor
Air Tank
The air tank in the air suspension system is where compressed air is stored by the compressor
Air dryer filter
The air dryer is installed on the compressor and has the task of dehumidifying the air. In this way, water that can cause damage to the system does not penetrate into the system
Air Spring
The compressed air inside the stored airbag acts as a shock absorber. In addition, by increasing and decreasing, it adjusts the height of the vehicle. This feature plays an effective role in buses and trailers. Also, in super sports cars, air reduction makes the center of gravity closer to the ground and maintains stability
Advantages of air suspension system
The unique features of air suspension are one of the main reasons why most trailer and bus manufacturers around the world use air suspension. Some of the important features of this system are
Low cost
Wide range of sizes
long life
The possibility of quality control and testing in the factory

How does the air suspension system improve the quality of the car
By lowering the height of the car, this system makes it easier to get in and out of SUVs and also reduces drag at high speeds
The ride height can be increased for normal use
The ground clearance can also be raised for off-road driving
The stiffness of the spring can be changed to support different driving modes
The pneumatic system can be used with any type of damping system, including magnetorheological adaptive dampers and anti-roll bars with variable stiffness.
Air spring replaces coil springs and integrates with suspension shock absorbers
Air springs can be used independently of shock absorbers
Air bags usually consist of hard and flexible air bags and are available in different types and sizes
